Next month young people under 25 years of age will have the opportunity to learn more about what life is really like working behind or in front of a camera. For the past 9 years Cinemagic International Film and Television Festival has given young people in Dublin the chance to immerse themselves in the world of TV and film culture and to learn from some of the industry’s most established names.
The 2016 Festival is divided into a junior and senior programme with events running from 9- 22 May across the city.

Family and Teen Films
Sit back and enjoy great movies from around the world including gala previews, family favourites and new international features. All screened at Cineworld movie titles include Labyrinthus, Keeper, The Case of Hana and Alice, Dryads – Girls Don’t Cry, The Circle, Monster Hunt, Dofus- Book 1: Julith, Prince, The Little Mountain Boy by Oscar winning director Xavier Koller, animated fairy tale Mune, Siv Sleeps Astray, Secret Society of Souptown and Zarafa.
Masterclasses and Workshops
This inspiring segment of the festival gives participants (aged 16-25) an in-depth insight into working in the film industry. This year’s programme includes a masterclass in casting with the acclaimed Ros Hubbard, which will give aspiring actors the opportunity to work one of the top casting professionals in the industry. Love/Hate actress, Aoibhinn McGinnity will also visit this masterclass and lead a Q&A session for the participants. Oscar nominated animation studio, Cartoon Saloon will present a workshop exploring the exciting world of animation and Cinemagic Dublin Short Film Academy will give young people the opportunity to be part of a production crew for a film being produced as part of the Dublin Film Academy. Workshops specifically for kids aged 8-11 feature Storyboarding and Character Design presented by Flickerpix’s Joel Simon and Scriptwriting with BAFTA nominated writer Tim Clague and filmmaker, Danny Stack.
Festival Jury
Cinemagic aims to inspire the next generation of cinema audiences to both enjoy and critique film. Registration is now open to be part of The CineSeekers Jury Programme which is a cross border initiative and suitable for young people aged 8-11 and The CineFocus 12+ and 15+ Jury Programmes, which are suitable for ages 12-14 and 15-18 respectively. The young film critics will get to view youth focused films from around the world, take part in review workshops, meet and learn from professional film critics and make lots of new friends in the process.
Film Events for Families
An expanded element of the Festival this year sees a variety of workshops partnered with a classic children’s film in Filmbase. ‘Stringtastic’ provides an introduction to film music and acoustics with Gareth Hopkins and Nigel Ireland, which will be followed by a screening of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Before the screening of Paddington, explore myths and legends from around the world with storyteller Jack Lynch and take part in a book swap event during the lunch break. Other events include a puppet making workshop combined with a screening of The Good Dinosaur, or a pirate workshop along with a screening of Muppet Treasure Island.
Education Programme
The festival is delighted to present an exciting film education programme which helps to inspire young people, stimulate discussion on social issues and to provide practical opportunities to learn new skills. There is something for every age group and interest:
School events for primary and nursery pupils include:
Matilda – Celebrating 100 years of Roald Dahl with storytelling from Jack Lynch , Special effects make-up in film with Triona Gogarty, Lovemovies.ie Craft and Graft workshop, The Word of Beatrix Potter – Early Years Drama with Emma Coogan, Music and Songs from Lily’s Driftwood Bay and The Geography Show. There will also be special screenings of films including Blinky Bill the Movie, Inside Out, and Who Killed Nelson Nutmeg with a Director/Writer Q&A. Cinemagic’s My First Cinema Trip is an initiative targeted at nursery and early years pupils with screenings of Thomas & Friends, Ted Sieger’s Molly Monster. The nursery programme also visits nursery schools where the big screen comes to the school for the morning introducing children to the wonder of film and TV through a series of short films and TV episodes.
Secondary school programme (ages 15-18) events include:
Costume Making with Breege Fahy, VFX in Brooklyn with Windmill Lane, Special Effects Make-Up in Film with MKF Institute and Action for Screen with Eimear O’Grady. These events are hosted in the classrooms of participating schools to help immerse students in the workshops and alleviate travel costs.
Additional events for 15-18 year olds include Inside News! News production and news presenting with TV3, Documentary Focus – A Syrian Love Story and Q&A with BAFTA nominated filmmaker Sean McAllister, Film Classification with IFCO, Creative Writing with Fighting Words, F-Rating: Representing Women in Film with Holly Tarquini and an education preview of The Boy and the Beast.
Celebrating Young Film Talent.
Young Filmmaker: Cinemagic is looking for imaginative and original films made by young people to be screened as part of Cinemagic Young Filmmaker 2016 which will take place during the annual Belfast Cinemagic Festival in October. The films can be about anything at all and a prize will be awarded for the best film in each genre and age category.
Young Consultants: Cinemagic has launched its annual call for young film enthusiasts to help select a series of films for the Cinemagic International Film and Television Festival for Young People taking place in Belfast this autumn. The young people selected will also contribute ideas for the festival programme and help with the promotion of festival events.

Since 2008, the festival has provided a unique opportunity for young people to gain an insight into the worlds of film-making and to meet with industry professionals through participation in master classes and workshops. Cinemagic initiatives such as the cross-border jury, young film critic competitions and cross border film camp provide young people from both jurisdictions on the island of Ireland with unique opportunities to engage and interact with their peers from across the island and to share their interest and opinions on films produced specifically for children’s audiences”.
