Cinemagic is proud to announce the launch of its inaugural Black History Month Programme, a vibrant new festival of film, music, discussion and community engagement taking place across Belfast this October.
Supported by the Belfast City Council Community Festivals Fund, the Cinemagic Black History Month Programme will celebrate diverse stories, voices and creativity on screen, while creating opportunities for audiences of all ages to come together through a dynamic programme of inclusive screenings, workshops and live events.
Running from the 3rd–13th October 2026, the festival will shine a spotlight on the richness of culture and storytelling through a specially curated series of events designed to inspire, educate and connect communities across Northern Ireland.

The festival programme will include:
- Inclusive film screenings celebrating Black storytelling from local and international filmmakers
- Industry Q&As and panel discussions exploring representation in film and media
- Live music performances showcasing exciting artists and cultural voices
- Creative workshops for young people and families
- A special Foodbank Screening, combining cinema with community support and social action
- Community events encouraging conversation, inclusion and cultural exchange
As a new initiative for Cinemagic, the programme of activity marks an important step in the organisation’s ongoing commitment to championing diversity, accessibility and meaningful cultural experiences through film.

Cinemagic CEO, Joan Burney Keatings MBE said “With support from Belfast City Council’s Community Festivals Fund, Cinemagic is proud to present an inaugural dedicated programme celebrating Black History Month in October. We have put together a fantastic series of engaging, entertaining and informative events, which will contribute to strengthening community relations and showcase Black and minority ethnic creative talent, whilst inspiring audiences and fostering a sense of belonging. I encourage young people and audiences of all ages to get involved and try something new as part of the vibrant programme of film screenings, outreach events, music events and creative workshops.”
Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Róis-Máire Donnelly said, “We’re delighted to be able to support the Cinemagic Black History Month Programme through our Festivals Fund. This exciting new venture from Cinemagic is an opportunity to learn more about black history through film, workshops, and discussion, whilst also bringing people together to experience and celebrate the cultural diversity of the city.
As the great Maya Angelou said, there is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you. Bíonn dhá insint ar scéal agus fiúntas san bheirt.
This festival of film presents everyone with the opportunity to witness new stories, experience art, learn about important moments in history, and connect with people throughout the city.”
The Cinemagic Black History Month Programme will offer audiences the chance to discover powerful stories, engage with artists, and experience events that reflect both the importance of Black History Month and the growing appetite for more inclusive screen programming in Northern Ireland.
By bringing together film lovers, families, young creatives and local communities, the festival aims to create a welcoming space where culture, conversation and creativity can thrive.
This inaugural festival marking Black History Month represents a significant new chapter for Cinemagic – using the power of film not only to entertain, but to celebrate identity, amplify underrepresented voices and inspire future generations.
