his weekend at Cinemagic there are treats galore for film fans and young filmmakers before the curtain closes on another action packed 24 days of Festival delights!
Tonight the festival will be previewing the new documentary RICHARD LINKLATER – DREAM IS DESTINY, an unusual look at a fiercely independent style of filmmaking that arose from Austin, Texas in the 80s/90s and how Linklater’s films sparked a low budget movement in the US and around the world (FRIDAY 28 OCT, 8.15PM, STRAND ARTS CENTRE, £6/£5)
Over the course of the festival the work of past Cinemagic Young Filmmakers, who are now forging out successful careers in film and TV, has been celebrated, and this weekend there are three events on offer. On Friday night there is screening the first feature film to be directed by local filmmaker Michael Lennox; A PATCH OF FOG is a taut and twisty suspense thriller that seizes you in its opening scenes and keeps you in its grips till its tension filled finale (FRIDAY 28 OCT, 6.30PM, QUEEN’S FILM THEATRE, £5/£4)
On Saturday morning Leo McGuigan’s BRAXTON screens; a throwback to the popular slasher films of the 80’s/90’s such as ‘Scream’, ‘Halloween’ and ‘My Bloody Valentine’, Leo will be taking part in an audience Q&A after the screening (SATURDAY 29 OCT, 10.30AM, QUEEN’S FILM THEATRE, £5/£4)
On Saturday afternoon filmmaker and Cinemagic alumni Samuel Steele will be talking about his upcoming documentary GROENLAND, a film about identity and climate change in Greenland. Samuel will be explaining how he got the project off the ground, how he’s funded the production and offer advice to independent filmmakers with similar aspirations (SATURDAY 29 OCT, 1.15PM, QUEEN’S FILM THEATRE, £3)
The weekend also sees the return of film critic and broadcaster supremo, Mark Kermode, to the festival for his annual Film Night and this year’s screening FORBIDDEN PLANET. The festival’s Young Filmmaker Showcase also takes place this Saturday and Sunday. As well as celebrating young talent, the Young Filmmaker Showcase allows young directors to view films made by their peers and offers the opportunity for them to network and talk movies! At the showcase the shortlisted films will be presented before we announce the 2016 winners. Come along to celebrate the achievements of young people and meet the filmmaking stars of the future.

In the Crescent Arts Centre Cinemagic will team up with story artist, animator and filmmaker David Bunting to offer young people a fascinating and practical workshop on Storyboarding and Design. David has worked on feature films including THE TIGGER MOVIE and TV Shows including BOB THE BUILDER and CHUGGINGTON (SAT 29 OCT, 1PM – 4PM, CRESCENT ARTS CENTRE, £12)
In the Ulster Museum this weekend there is the fabulous FIVE CHILDREN AND IT followed by a creative workshop where young people will be tasked to make their very own ‘Sand Fairy’ (SUN 30 OCT, 10.15AM – 12.30PM, THE ULSTER MUSEUM, £5)
Especially for Halloween there is a spooky ‘Fancy Dress’ screening of MONSTERS UNIVERSITY (SUN 30 OCT, 1PM – 3PM, THE ULSTER MUSEUM, £3) and there is a 60th Anniversary screening of the masterful THE RED BALLOON followed by a fun and practical art collage workshop where young people will get the opportunity to make their own movie posters! There is a host of world cinema on offer at Odyssey Cinemas including the animated/live action hybrid, MONSTER HUNT (SAT 29 OCT, 1PM-3.00PM, £5/£4) and closing the festival is the inspirational documentary, LIFE, ANIMATED (SUN 30 OCT, 7PM, £6/£5) from director Roger Ross Williams, winner of the Best Director Award at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival.
