Introductory Courses
BFI Film Academy Introductory Courses offer 30 hours of free, hands-on filmmaking experience, giving young people the chance to explore what working in film and TV is really like. You’ll work collaboratively on a practical film project, get experience with industry equipment, learn about the wide range of roles behind film and TV, and hear directly from professionals working in the industry.
Cinemagic — Introduction to Filmmaking from Script to Screen
Ever wondered what it takes to turn words on a page into a scene on screen?
This free BFI Film Academy Introductory Course, delivered by Cinemagic as part of BFI Film Academy Northern Ireland, gives young people aged 16–19 the chance to get hands-on with the filmmaking process.
Working with other participants, you’ll take a real script and bring it to life on screen, exploring roles including directing, camera, editing and costume along the way. Guided by experienced industry professionals, including a working director of photography, you’ll develop practical filmmaking skills as you plan, shoot and edit your own scene.
Once your scene is complete, you’ll compare it with the original film and explore how different creative and technical choices can shape what we see on screen.
As part of the course, you’ll also have access to selected Cinemagic Film and TV Festival events, giving you more opportunities to experience film, hear from the industry and begin building connections.
No previous filmmaking experience is needed, just an interest in film and a willingness to get involved.
